If there is one thing I would encourage development departments to do in 2010 is to say goodbye to Visual SourceSafe (VSS) forever. VSS was a fantastic product for its time. When I first starting using it with Visual Basic 5.0 and 6.0 it was pretty much all there was. It allowed developers to keep their code safe in a central location and gave you the ability to rollback at will.
However, VSS was not built for the demands of modern development. Large multi-location teams, offsite development via the internet, and large code bases are just a few issues that exposes the cracks in VSS.
Team Foundation Server (TFS) was built to take over where VSS left off and provide many additional features. If you do nothing else but install TFS for source control you have done yourself a huge favour.
With the release of TFS 2010 comes new, very attractive, licensing. If you are a MSDN subscriber you will receive a full version of TFS 2010 that is licensed for unlimited development and test use and one production deployment. If you are not a MSDN subscriber you can get a copy of TFS 2010 with 5 client licenses for about US$500.
Migrating from VSS to TFS is not a difficult task, but does require some planning. Agora has expertise in VSS to TFS migrations and TFS to TFS migrations that can ensure your organization makes a seamless transition to TFS.
