2nd Best Job for the Future?

The morning radio I listened to today had a list of the “Best Jobs for the Future”.  Software engineer came second, behind Actuary.  Now I’m not one to frown on another profession, but this seemed a little out of order.  Actuaries deal mostly with numbers and arcane issues of mortality risk and the like.  Their job is typically one of analysis, logic and discipline.  They work mostly individually and need to wait years to see the fruits of their labour.

Software engineers no doubt apply logic, analysis and discipline but the end goals is to actually create something of meaningful value.

Our software engineers are involved in building a wide range of applications for a wide range of users and customers.  The scope of these can become pretty mind-boggling – from order entry systems for a steel maker, to online consumer digital photofinishing sites – and everything in between.

On larger projects, software engineers get to collaborate, learn from and mentor other members of a development team.  This makes the work infinitely more interesting and aids in personal growth and development.

Add the ability to work remotely from customers (including home based if desired) and the interesting (although never-ending) quest to stay up to date with technology changes and I would have to argue that Software Engineer should easily be rated #1.

Almost makes me want to go back to school and change my major from Accounting.
