The top 3 questions I get asked about Express for Microsoft Project Online

#1) What’s the difference between Project Pro 365 and Project Online?

Project Professional is the industry recognized project management/scheduling tool for project managers. It is essentially a downloaded desktop program.

Project Online is an enterprise project & portfolio management solution, taking what a PM is doing on a single project in Project Professional to the birds eye view of all projects across the organization.

Project Online is actually Project Server on the cloud. It allows project managers to communicate assignments with their teams via a web platform and a space for the team to collaborate on project artifacts. As Microsoft’s enterprise solution, Project Online provides visibility on all projects and all resources across the organization. It is great for managing multiple projects and balancing broad resource needs.

When hooked up to the cloud server, project professional is great for detailed project planning, managing resource calendars, and rich analysis of the project schedule.

#2) Do I need to purchase Office365 additionally to use Express?

Express is a Project Online solution. Project Online is an Office365 & SharePoint Online extension. This means that your Project Online licensing includes access to all of the web-based services included in Office365 and SharePoint online.

However, for synchronization of the web based services (e.g. Word Online) with your desktop software (Word 2013) you will need to purchase a different set of Office365 licensing. This also applies for Skype and Exchange (Outlook) synchronization.

#3) Can I customize Express?

Express is a fully configured Project Online solution offered as a service and as such allows limited customizations to the solution.

Our Express training and knowledge centre provides how-to guides for your administrators to learn how to make simple customizations to your Express. Many of our customers add additional filters, groups, and fields to Project Centre dashboards, Excel Services BI reports, and Project Detail Pages. Other customers choose to add their company logo on the homepage.

For a more tailored /customized solution, consider a Sprint or AIM implementation instead.
